How about giving up showy Religiosity?

A jewish friend of mine insisted that he was giving up pork for lent one year.

Before anybody says it … I get the whole sacrifice of Jesus for mankind thing. What I want to know, is what the point of the sacrifices people make for lent is? For example, one of the most common ones is sacrificing meat. Others will forgo sex for a few weeks.

Is this really supposed to be analogous to sacrificing your life in terms of learning a life lesson?

I am amazed at how much discussion was initiated by my poll. This poll was generated due to the conversations at work that have been inspired by the decisions people have made regarding what, if anything was being sacrificed for lent.

I don’t practice the tradition of Lent, But I commend the people who sacrifice something they greatly enjoy as long as the motives are pure. (Especially those whom incorporate giving into the equation) Giving up junk food and donating the money saved to a food bank would be a wonderful way to celebrate Lent.
