Quite the homophobic crowd ... by markmcb :: NR7

I'm just curious if anyone has any reason for anti-homosexual feelings other than, "JESUS told me to!" (Note Southern Baptist inflection.) I can feel the surge of weak statistical evidence amassing as I type this.

At the risk of opening up another firestorm like the last poll, I admit to being curious: what about your selected poll option makes it "distateful"?

Was it distateful in that it "goes against your moral beliefs", that it "is harmful to society at large", or something else altogether?

For the Christians choosing #4 ... by markmcb :: NR7

I'm anxious to hear why a homosexual union is more distasteful than a polygamous one. Doesn't the latter directly violate a commandment from God Himself (assuming you believe marriage to be the union of one man and one woman)?

markmcb and Liz by schinckel :: NR0

I just wanted to check that the two responses that chose markmcb and Liz weren't in fact markmcb, and Liz. Can someone just confirm this for me?

Of course, by the time anyone else reads this, there may be more than two responses choosing this option, in which case my comment looks stupid.

Or stupider.

A ridiculous idea from the past by Jackson :: NR0

As repugnant as the idea of separate but equal is based on historical experience, what would be wrong with giving all the rights and financial breaks to a homosexual union and then calling it "warriage" or "darriage" or even civil union. Do conservatives really have a problem with homosexuals being legally together or is it that they don't like the "attack" on marriage as an institution?

If they have a problem with them being legally together, I don't think they have any standing at all.

Furthermore, do homosexuals need to have the label "marriage" to be happy or will they be happy with all the rights and priviledges under a different name?

Does this argument have to be the total conquest of the opposing view? Can there be no compromise?

What marriage is by Brandon :: NR9

First, I think it's important to understand how critical this issue is to society. Essentially, the family is society, and the principles on which families are run will permeate every aspect of life (e.g., education, government, crime, etc.). This fact could change as the government takes (or is given) the power/responsibility to displace parents in their traditional responsibilities, but until we have a brave new world on our hands (and we become a society made up of individuals, not families), government will be hard pressed to beat out the family in societal influence. (Examples of this impact can be found in drug use, emotional and behavioral health, scholastic aptitude, psychosocial adjustment, some other tidbits, etc.) In fact, some even propose the family as the manifestation of an individual's investment in social capital.

If one's aim is to improve society, then, it would be important to recognize the defining and most important element of a family: the relationship between its parts. The makeup and circumstances of a family that directly affect these relationships are, then, of high importance to society. Reasons for people to be involved in this issue, then, go beyond what is "gross."

Marriage is not something to be taken lightly; it is a (the most?) fundamental and influential part of the family, the foundation of society.

-----

Now, on to the more controversial matter: my vote.

The above should be enough to establish the seriousness of the marriage issue, but, for me, marriage is much more than a secular functional establishment. "Marriage between a man and a woman is ordained of God and that the family is central to the Creator's plan for the eternal destiny of His children." (The Family: A Proclamation to the World)

There are most likely generally good and happy people who are married in each of the choices listed, but marriage and families are bigger than this world or the time we spend on it. So, when I voted, I took into account what marriage is and the scope of it's impact: eternity. Of all the choices, only homosexual marriage has no eternal potential. All of the others (depending on the circumstances and the choices of those involved) could evolve into marriage as it was meant to be.

(Begin the "there's-no-evidence-for-that" retort attempts.)

Shocked by spamtastic :: NR0

I am quite shocked that homosexual marriage has been rated the most distasteful. Every human being on the face of this planet has a right to be in the type of relationship that they want to be in. Why should a person, that is born "gay" not be with a person of the same gender, that they love, just because society looks down on it. This is quite an eye opener. Proves just how closed minded people are. Homosexuals are not any different than you or I, except for the fact that they are sexually attracted to the same sex.

I would have to say that you missed the union between a human and their animals. some people now have wills for their pets!..
