Natural ? by Occams
Why is there an assumption that “natural” means safer? There are so many natural plant substances that can kill you in truly horrible ways.
Neither does a remedial medical substance have to be a pharmaceutical to be “real”.

I am all for alleviating the suffering of the ill, but when it comes to legalizing marijuana, there needs to be a bit more science behind it. This article articulates some of my feelings on the matter. I would love to see a debate surrounding this subject. I’m sure it would involve heath care professionals, law enforcement agencies, government officials, the religiously concerned, and some other miscellaneous organizations.

As a proud graduate of the 6 th grade D.A.R.E. program, I am pretty much always anti-drug. My initial reaction to any debate about legalizing any drug is always against. At the same time, I am healthy and have never had a relative have to suffer through a wasting and painful disease.
In the end, I selected “Yes” because I just don’t know. Brandon and I had a long and drawn out argument about legalization of marijuana where he made several points that altered my view of marijuana use and legality questions.
It all comes down to whatever is best for the patient, in my mind. If a doctor really thinks that medical marijuana will help their terminally ill patient, who am I to tell them no dice? In this case, I would have to leave that judgement to healthcare professionals whereas right now it resides with the courts. Legalization of medical marijuana places that responsibility on the group of people mostly likely to understand its effects. Could it be abused? Sure. So are most other prescription drugs (see Michael Jackson or Anna Nicole Smith).

based on your opinion (or what the tv told you), do a little digging! Pharmaceutical companies benefit greatly from the criminalization of cannabis. You can’t patent a plant. But you can create a synthetic version of the psychoactive THC from the cannabis plant and sell it for $700 for 30 doses! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dronabinol (See the section on “dronabinol”). They state that their product is not harmful and not addicting, but it takes longer to work than smoking the real thing. No not everything natural is safe or beneficial, but a lot of people need to stop talking about cannabis until they find out the facts. Did you know it is physically impossible to overdose on “marijuana”? That’s why the CDC has never reported even one. http://www.drugpolicy.org/marijuana/factsmyths/
