craigslist Prostitution Promotion Controversy

Newspaper current event by jmarkdavison on 17 November 2006, tagged as internetnetworking

Over the past two weeks, 104 men have been arrested in a Seattle prostitution sting, the majority of whom responded to ads placed by detectives on craigslist, the free classified ad site. Founder Craig Newmark said that he has heard "prostitution is a significant problem" on craigslist and claimed the site has an excellent history of responding to complaints of illegal activity.

"I don't know what the situation is like in Seattle, but we would prefer that [police] go after violent criminals or crooked congressmen," Newmark added.

Every local craigslist has an "erotic" category under its "services" section. Seattle police also used information found on the discussion boards to catch johns and prostitutes. Seven women and a 16-year-old girl were also arrested as part of the investigation.
