Wild Ideas for Stopping Global Warming

Newspaper current event by mwhite on 21 July 2005, tagged as technology

Popular Science reports that while the Bush administration was downplaying the evidence supporting global warming and justifying its rejection of the economically detrimental Kyoto Protocol, it was also looking for more novel solutions to the changing climate. Six ideas presented to the administration to curb global warming:

1. Pump CO2 underground for storage

2. Filter CO2 directly from the air with something akin to large fly paper

3. Fertilize the ocean to stimulate CO2-consuming plankton

4. Turn CO2 to stone through chemical processing

5. Enhance clouds reflectivity by seeding them with sea salt

6. Deflect sunlight with a huge space mirror

Will the effects of global warming ever justify launching a 600-square-mile deflecting mirror into space?

Will the effects of global warming ever justify the overwhelming stupidity of the Bush administration?

Well, at least it can\'t be said people aren\'t creative; and of course, I don\'t think any of those ideas have been selected for actual trial (yet).

It stinks that all of the proposals look like they would create more problems than they would solve- either by having side effects or requiring too much energy to make. Hopefully we get fusion energy soon? o_o

In any event, I\'ll just wish for a hybrid Toyota Prius :P Of course, removing or downplaying the causes now would not remove all, if any, of the \'excess\' CO2 already out there. I would go for #4 for more help.

...The mirror is proposed to be 600,000 mi. sq. by the way, not just 600.

How 'bout a band-aid? by jmarkdavison :: NR6

We could extend Daylight Savings Time by a month. Now there's something ridiculous!

Global Warming by Anonymous :: NR0

To Whom It May Concern :

I think that all countries should manufacture huge vacuums

that suck out sand from the ocean depths and pump the sand

out onto central land areas.

The sand can then be used to make cement for construction.

By doing this, more space also gets created for additional

water from melting ice at the poles.

This does not solve the problem of Global Warming

but it should alleviate a problem that will probably

not be reversed over night.
