A new search engine is attempting to break into the already crowded market composed of Google, Ask, Yahoo and MSN amongst others. Wikia was launched on 7 January and attempts to bring the Open Source philosophy to the search engine world. While existing search engines keep their algorithms closely guarded secrets to protect against SEO gaming, Wikia makes their algorithm available to the public. The Wikia principles hope that through public scrutiny and public contribution, the search engine will be self-filtering and automatically lean towards the most useful of websites.
Additionally, if the name didn't betray it, the newcomer integrates wiki principles into its search engine. According the Wikia About page, users are able to create/edit "'miniarticles' that appear at the top of popular search terms. These will vary in purpose according to the circumstance, but the primary uses will be: short definitions, disambiguations, photos and see also."
