Where to Draw the Line on School Library Censorship

Newspaper current event by Brandon on 29 April 2007, tagged as education

Most everyone likely remembers some sort of book controversy in their younger days. Parents often disapprove of what their children might find in a local or school library. With words like "obscene," "censorship" and "education" thrown into the mix, you know the issue becomes raucous - involving school administrators, librarians, and sometimes judges. This article specifically addresses the librarian's piece of the pie, suggesting ways and means by which this hot controversy can be kept under control.

From the article, "Having knowledge of the reasons behind book challenges, the implications and role of the First Amendment and the American Library Association’s Library Bill of Rights, the difference between censorship and selection, and the absolute necessity of having a written selection and review policy will help the librarian know how to appropriately respond when a challenge comes."
