While it seems intuitively obvious that ceasing physical activity will result in weight gain, it took a recent study by the Berkeley Lab to discern how much. Using a sample group of more than 25,000 people, life sciences researcher Paul Williams found irregularities in exercise introduced a greater variability in weight gain than maintaining consistency. "At lower mileages, there is asymmetric weight gain and loss from increasing and decreasing exercise, leading to an expected weight gain from an exercise hiatus. ... In other words, if you stop exercising, you don’t get to resume where you left off if you want to lose weight."
