Pirates are becoming an increasingly large threat to international shipping and seaborne travel. The waters of the coast of Somalia are unsafe, and vessels are advised to stay more than 150 miles off the coast and to avoid using communications equipment. Attacks in Indonesian waters are also common, and the South Pacific is not immune from the problem either.
Pirates' guerrilla style tactics present the usual problems for military and law enforcement officials, but very little has been done to stop these criminals. Is this a threat that is worth addressing? How will the problem be handled if it is significant enough? Finally, how does one apply to be on the boats that go out to hunt pirates?
One weapon that the Navy has developed uses earsplitting noise in a directed beam. This sonic weapon was recently used by a cruise ship that was attacked by pirates off the coast of Somalia, although authorities are still trying to determine if it was the noise or the cruise ship's defensive maneuvering that caused the pirates to flee the scene.
Like the title says, I hope we get some pirates on my cruise. I leave on Friday for a cruise in the Caribbean hitting Cozumel, Mexico (possibly) as well as Ocho Rios, Jamaica and Grand Cayman. It'd be awesome to get a chance to use my Ninja skills and kick some pirate butt.
Search Wikipedia for the term "Q-ship" and you'll have your answer. Short version: A military vessel that looks like a civilian freighter or passenger liner, but sports modern anti-ship weaponry beneath concealment panels.
Enjoy!

Seaborne Infantry by Bortnyk :: NR6 :: Show
I recently came across an article outlining the Navy's new Expeditionary Combat Battalions. Apparently you joined the wrong service, and should have joined the Navy. From there you should have applied to be a SEAL, and been rejected. Then you could have been in the Navy Infantry. Once there you would have learned how to board pirate vessels, and perhaps combat Ninjas. Perhaps there might have been swashbuckling, I don't know how crazy it would have gotten.
