Virtual World Controlled Via Imagination

Newspaper current event by gnifyus on 28 June 2007, tagged as technology and medical

By merging two different technologies brought together by the European consortium PRESENCCIA, scientists are able to connect a brain-computer interface (BCI) to a virtual digital world allowing a person to "navigate" the world only by using their imagination. Scientists from the Graz University of Technology in Austria specialize in measuring the signals put out from the brain, whereas the University College London (UCL) is involved with creating highly immersive virtual reality worlds. Combining the two technologies gives a person the ability to traverse the digital world via their own brain signals put forth by simply imagining their next move.

The initial use of this technology is being developed for rehabilitating brain-injured patients by taking advantage of the brain's ability to reroute neural paths.
