Violent Game Law Ruled Unconstitutional

Newspaper current event by Brandon on 04 April 2006, tagged as gamessports and lawjustice

In a move that has been done by five other courts in the past three years, the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan, 'has handed down a permanent injunction halting the implementation of the new Michigan state law that would restrict video game sales to minors.' The issue continues to pit psychologists and anti-game activists against free-speech advocates and the video game industry.

When I read about cases like this, I often wonder which method of experimentation is worse for kids:

  1. Practice in fantasy: A kid develops a curiousity (e.g. shooting a person) and wonders what it would be like. He turns on his ultra-violent video game, kills 400+ people in 5 minutes and satisfies his curiosity.
  2. Practice in reality: A kid develops a curiousity (e.g. shooting a person) and wonders what it would be like. Having no outlet other than reality, he shoots his friend with a pellet gun at close range causing some level of real injury. After the shooting his curiosity is satisfied.

Obviously #1 could lead to some sort of addiction that can only be satisfied in reality. I've never dug into this issue before though. Does anyone know of any studies, papers, or sites, that present statistical data on the two above scenarios?

Seduction of The Innocent redux by LordDilly :: NR8

Frederick Wertham is alive and well- at least his spirit of misplaced priorities. Some scum bag goes on a killing rampage and blames it on Grand Theft Auto: and people go along with it. Yup, it's the video games fault. Does the thought that either this guy is full of it or if he was influenced by the game then he is obviously insane ever cross these people's minds, or do they just jump right on the dude's bandwagon without any critical thinking at all?
