An activist group in Brattleboro, VT will seek the arrest and indictment of President Bush and V.P. Cheney for war crimes if they dare to set foot inside the town. 54 year old Kurt Daims, who is leading the drive states, "This petition is as radical as the Declaration of Independence, and it draws on that tradition in claiming a universal jurisdiction when governments fail to do what they're supposed to do." In another written statement he argues, "Don't worry that it's not a legal document. The Declaration of Independence wasn't a legal document, either."
Vermont has an ongoing history of anti-Bush administration sentiment, having voted 16-9 in the state senate last April in a non-binding resolution for the impeachment of Bush and Cheney.
The measure from the annual town meeting specifically asks: "Shall the Selectboard instruct the Town Attorney to draft indictments against President Bush and Vice President Cheney for crimes against our Constitution, and publish said indictment for consideration by other municipalities?"
The measure has far from unanimous support, and even Vermont Attorney General William Sorrel whose office has repeatedly sued the administration over environmental issues. He states, "The move was of very dubious legality," and, "if this passed, they'd have really uphill sledding trying to have it be legal and enforceable."
As it stands, Bush has visited 49 states in his presidency, the one exception being Vermont.
I can only imagine the sort of "greeting" that the Secret Service agents charged with protecting the President and VP would have in store for any local law enforcement officers who would actually try this sort of a stunt. It would make for an interesting pay per view event, if only they could do something to even up the odds a bit. Maybe something like getting the entire Vermont National Guard up against the President's Secret Service detail. Now that would be an interesting match up.

===> Can you legally do this against the US president????
There is now a National petition in support of the Brattleboro movement.

Bush and Cheney have done more harm to the US and it's economy then they have against Iraq.

No Bush in Vermont by cidman2001 :: NR0 :: Show
As I giggle with glee at the premise of this, I find myself a bit peturbed. I'm not upset that this movement exists, I can't belive that Bush has snubbed us Vermonters for 8 years now. Mind you now, I hadn't really missed him, but I bet our Republican Governor feels left out.
I'd have to venture a guess and say that Bush and Bill O'reilly don't visit our state for the same reason....they can't stand to have their ridiculous positions scutinized by some good 'ol New England sensibilities. They want to claim that Vermont is a hotbed of left-wing liberalism. If that's what they think, I say go ahead and let them think that and stay away. Normal Vermonters don't have any desire to engage the radicals on either fringe, but since we seem to have an overwhelming number of Lefties, It's ok that the Righties snub us. How much BS can a tiny state take?
