U.S.A - Locked and Loaded

Newspaper current event by willwaddell on 29 August 2007, tagged as sociology

It's perhaps not much of a surprise, but it is official - the U.S. is the most heavily armed country on the planet, according to a new survey. With 90 guns for every 100 citizens, Americans own 270 million of the world's 875 million known firearms. In fact, Americans buy approximately 4.5 million of the 8 million guns manufactured each year. Coming in a distant second is Yemen, which has 61 guns per 100 people. India is second in absolute terms; its civilian gun arsenal is estimated at 46 million. Finland follows Yemen with 56 guns per 100 people, then Switzerland with 46, followed by Iraq (39) and Serbia (38).

Got you covered. by MateFrio :: NR4

Six people in my family and a few more guns than that in my safe. I know very few gun owners who have stopped at just one gun in their collection. It is kinda sad when I see these news reports about an "arsnel" found in a home and I have more guns than what is being displayed.

I have a friend who after a gun show would play "what's new in the safe?" with his 22 year old son. He would also say things like "I think I have one of those."

Our 2nd Amendment by ldsudduth :: NR6

To me, it seems absurd to own a gun, unless you're using it for hunting. I don't own one, I don't see a need for one. I'm not a trained military shooter (hey, I opted to carry the SHOTGUN on the repel boarders drills--no need to be accurate :D), but I can hit a human-sized target in the chest at 25 yards. Would I incapaciatate or kill them? Who knows. To me, the best security at home is my phone on the nightstand.

There are statistics that show both ways: Owning a gun makes it safer, or owning a gun means you're more likely to be killed during a home invasion. (Lies, darn lies, and statistics..LOL) But, the 2nd amendment says I can own one, and I won't argue with that. I just choose not to.

I think a home invasion while I'm home is even less likely to occur than a shark attack. And, I've already been through a two daylight home invasions while away: As a teen, we were broken into twice--lost two sets of antique silverware, my photography gear (not the darkroom, just the cameran and associated lenses), our TV's and Stereos the first time, and the garage was broken into later with the loss of a large tool set, fishing gear, and my bicycle. I'm sure who did it both times but could never prove the first. I caught someone riding my bicycle (it was painted in a two-tone combination I had done myself) and they told me who sold it to them; even signed an affadavit when the cops showed up. My bike had been registered by the local PD, and even though they had removed the sticker, inside the handlebar was a piece of paper with my name, address, and etc. on it. Insurance covers valuables, no need in losing your life over it. Granted it doesn't cover emotional loss; but one can get over that. We did; the silverware had been given by both of my grandmothers.
