Toshiba's methanol fuel cell has been in development for more than five years. However, at this year's CES, Toshiba demonstrated an Ultra-Mobile PC (UMPC) powered by a direct methanol fuel cell laden with enough horsepower to run Windows Vista. The device seems to work by docking with the fuel cell for a power recharge to save on size and weight. A fuel cell would allow users to literally "run forever" so long as they continued to change the reactant.
Another Toshiba demonstration integrated a Cell processor from Sony into their upcoming G45 laptop. Sony's Cell has already proven itself capable of extraordinary computing capability in HPC and grid applications. Toshiba puts a four core version of the Cell alongside an Intel Core 2 Duo to offload graphics intensive tasks such as upscaling video to HD or performing real time video interpretation of commands through a webcam. It is not clear whether the modified Q45 will become part of the product line.
