Astronomers from the Cosmic Evolution Survey (COSMOS) have created the first large-scale map of the distribution of dark matter. The map reveals an apparent "overlap of dark matter filaments with galaxies and other massive structures," which adds supports to the theory that the Universe is structured by the gravitational pull of dark matter.
The COSMOS team used the Hubble Space Telescope and several terrestrial instruments to observe how light from distant galaxies is bent by the light-less and heat-less dark matter's gravitational pull in a process called gravitational lensing. This allowed them to chart the position of dark matter in three dimensions and on a "wide sky" scale for the first time.
