The Dangers of the Sun

Newspaper current event by Eye.Of.Sage on 27 July 2006, tagged as ecology, medical, bio, and fitnessnutrition

According to a release from the World Health Organization (WHO), the sun kills 60,000 people annually: 48,000 from malignant melanomas and 12,000 from other kinds of skin cancer. The sun's ultraviolet radiation also causes sunburns, skin aging, eye cataracts, pterygium, cold sores, and more - although it also stimulates the production of Vitamin D, which prevents rickets, osteomalacia and osteoporosis and may also help some cancers and immune disorders.

To prevent UVR overexposure, the WHO recommends staying in the shade when UVR is the strongest (between 10 AM and 2 PM), wearing protective clothing, applying sunscreen with an SPF of 15+, and avoiding sunlamps and tanning salons.

Actions required! by jmarkdavison :: NR6 :: on 27 July 2006

1. We need to take steps to ban the sun.

2. We need to commit billions of dollars to study this problem.

3. We need to create a cabinet-level department that empowers local law enforcement to force people to use sunscreen and stay indoors.

4. We need "The Today Show" to feature this as their daily "crisis." If people hear it from Matt Lauer we just might save a few lives.

Anyone watched wifeswap lately? by ToxicMegacolon :: NR0 :: on 27 July 2006

Contrast the post with the repeated episode of wifeswap I had the joy of watching the other night. Not that I'm a regular viewer (I know that's what they all say) but it featured a minimalist vegan lady who swaps with a backwoods Kentucky wife whose family hunts for their food. The vegan lady was hilarious in that she FEEDS ON THE SUN. Yes, she forgoes the dangers of UV rays to stare directly into it every day in the teachings of a Tibetan monk to somehow PHOTOSYNTHESIZE sunrays into food. She admits...I still haven't perfected it yet, I mean I still have to eat food, but maybe one day I won't have to." She still doesn't have a good answer why millions who are starving across the world, starve when they are out in the sun all day long. Maybe all that staring gave her a disorder!
