Wired.com is touting the Mercedes-Benz 2007 S-Class sedan as The Ultimate Geek Car. Why the prestigious moniker? For a mere 10,000 Hamiltons, the new luxury ride boasts a hefty list of technical innovations that most techies can only dream about, including an on-board radar system, automated acceleration and braking controls (Distronic Plus cruise control) and night-vision display. The most impactful consequence of these abilities may be transitioning from highway speed to a complete stop or enduring stop-and-go traffic, both of which can be done without touching any pedals.
Mechanically, Mercedes claims in Automobile that the 32-valve, 5.5-liter V-8 that makes 388 hp and 391 lb-ft (enough to accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in 'scarcely over five seconds') will blow the doors off of its Audi and BMW competitors. It also boasts the first seven-speed automatic transmission.
