Swedes to Recycle Body Heat

Newspaper current event by gnifyus on 10 January 2008, tagged as sweden and alternative energy

The heat from the bodies of the 250,000 people a day passing through Central Station in Stockholm Sweden will be used to help warm the nearby office buildings of real estate firm Jernhusen AB. The company believes that about 15 to 20 percent of their heat requirements can be collected by using a system of ventilators to move heat from the station to heat water which can then be piped through the building. Since the ventilation system is already more or less in place, only the pipes and pumps need to be installed.

Speaking for Jernhusen, project leader Karl Sundholm claims the entire project will cost about 300,000 kronor (equivalent to roughly €32,000 or $47,000) to complete. "It just came up at a coffee meeting last summer. Somebody suggested: why not do something with all this heat in the station?"
