Surfer Proposes Theory of Everything

Newspaper current event by VnutZ on 16 November 2007, tagged as physics, theory, and mathematics

It's more lucid than simply an enigmatic "42." Garrett Lisi has recently submitted a proposed theory of unification that is dramatically simpler than many of the arcane proposals in the past. What sets Lisi apart from the stereotypical physicist is he's an impoverished surfer and snowboarder. "Being poor sucks," Lisi says. "It's hard to figure out the secrets of the universe when you're trying to figure out where you and your girlfriend are going to sleep next month."

The quest for a legitimate Unification Theory has teased scientists for decades. Unification Theory is one that combines "everything" - but specifically quantum physics and general relativity. Prior candidates included such ideas as String Theory. Garrett proposes a new model based on the mathematical E8 structure proven earlier this year. In an interview with New Scientist, Lisi exclaimed "My brain exploded with the implications and the beauty of the thing. I thought: 'Holy crap, that's it!'"

There's a copy of his paper on the archive. From a quick reading, it is technically dense, and I don't understand the connection between group theory and the standard model well enough to make any sort of comment about the papers correctness.
