Aaron Radlinski writes an interesting article that looks at how Homer was able to deliver his stories to a rather difficult crowd a few thousand years ago. Faced with a target audience that had never experienced anything like the events that transpire in his stories, Homer was forced to find a way to describe people, places, and events in terms that could be understood by the masses. On top of that, most people in Homer's time were illiterate. This article walks you through some of the techniques that Homer used to overcome these challenges.
If you've never read The Iliad, it's a must. Hopefully, whether you've read it or not, this article will give you some insight into its creation and delivery to people who weren't lucky enough to have movies filled with special effects. Hmmm... then again, maybe they were the lucky ones!
