The New Scientist is reporting an announcement made by a team of researchers from the Harefield Heart Science Centre near London in the U.K. that part of a human heart has been grown from stem cells for the first time. The discs, which are slightly over an inch wide and made from the same tissue as heart valves, represent a first step towards building an entire heart from stem cells.
The full results will be published in August and animal transplants are planned for later this year. If successful, replacement tissues could be grown and used in transplants for those suffering from heart disease within three years.
Human Sheep by VnutZ :: NR8 :: Show
I wish I still had the link - but I lost it. Sometime late last week, there was news about sheep that had been bio-engineered with human DNA such that they were essentially 15% human due to several of their organs being identical matches to human organs.
Wouldn't that completely shelve the stem cell debate - develop a hybrid animal stem cell that could grow a completely human organ?
