Slashdot has announced a contest to redesign the infamously ugly, yet wildly popular site built on Slashcode. The criteria for the contest are described as 'arbitrary and random,' but there are official rules and some specific requirements are listed, including:
- Uses Slashdot's existing CSS framework
- Works compatibly on most browsers
- Retains all major bits of information
- Doesn't require the addition of major new bits of data
- Retains some sense of visual continuity with Today's Slashdot
The prize is to be a laptop, and the contest will last three weeks, with a break after two for feedback from Slashdot and readers.

From the contest info:
Designs will be judged for retention of visual continuity with today's Slashdot.org Site such as the Slashdot 'Shade of Green' to the curve on the upper left hand corner of the page and article headers, and the Coliseo font. Sponsor recommends that Entries show the index, and a few other pages to indicate how the Design might look when showing data formats.
and:
There are a million great ideas for functions and features that could be added to Slashdot. This is not the place to propose them. This is about Look & Feel. This is not about telling us that we need voting on articles or tagging on polls. Those are valid feature suggestions that we would love to do one day. But this contest is about look & feel. Save feature requests for another time (and remember, patches are always welcome!)
I think the contest is a great idea and Slashdot will get plenty of great suggestions but it is unnecessarily narrow. The contest is about 'look and feel' yet the guidelines require maintaining 'visual continuity' down to the 'shades of green', article headers and font. I bet the best redesigns will not hold themselves strictly to CmdrTaco’s contest guidelines.
I'm just curious if anyone has any general or specific style concerns with OmniNerd. Obviously, I like the way things are laid out, but I'm sure there are varying opinions. While I can't promise you a laptop in exchange for feedback, I can promise that I'll listen to any suggestions. (Keep in mind that though some parts of the site are ugly, there's not much I can do about it.)
Slashdot just announced the contest winner:
The winner of the contest is Alex Bendiken. He will receive a new laptop as well as bragging rights as the creator of the new look of Slashdot. You can see his winning design in a near complete form now. Feel free to comment on any compatibility issues. We plan to take this live in the next few days. There will undoubtedly be a few minor glitches, but please submit bug reports and we'll sort it out as fast as possible. Also congratulations to Peter Lada, our runner up...
