LASIK (laser-assisted in-situ keratomileusis) is a surgical procedure using lasers to correct poor eyesight. The procedure works by using lasers to reshape the cornea such that light is correctly focused upon the retina. Roughly 7.6 million Americans have received the treatment after the price began to drop nearly a decade ago. The long term side effects of LASIK were once the great unknown, but a string of complaints has lead the FDA to take a new look at the risks and effects. Roughly 5% of all LASIK patients have reported having issues ranging from dry eye, blurry vision, glare and such discomforting pain that many have been driven to suicide.

Every one is an ad for a LASIK surgeon. All for an article that basically says "this LASIK stuff might be too risky".
I had PRK done about a year ago. LOVE not wearing glasses but vision is not quite as sharp as I had with nice, shiny new glasses. One eye went from ~20/650 to 20/25 the other was less extreme and worked better.
I had night time flaring from light sources for close to a year with one eye. Also caused problems with reading for several months, eye fatigue set in quickly.
LASIK would not have these problems but I have cro-magnon eyebrow ridges so was not an option.
All in all, it became an example for me of how medicine should work. I forked over $4k to someone I had reseached and he fixed my problem. Guvmint and insurance are evil.

Reminds me of that scene in Ghostbusters by romanizzo :: NR6 :: on 29 April 2008
"Now for the entrapment, we're going to have to ask you for four big ones, four-thousand dollars for that, but we are having a special this week on proton charging and storage of the beast, and that's only going to come to one-thousand dollars fortunately ."
"Five-thousand dollars? I had no idea it'd be so much, I won't pay it."
"Oh, that's okay. We can just put it right back in there."
"We certainly can Dr. Venkman."
"No, no, no, no! Anything."
"Thanks so much."
