Is it possible that in the distant future, President George W. Bush, the 43rd president, might be viewed as one of the greatest American Presidents?

Possible Ahmadinejad Tour of Ground Zero

Newspaper current event by VnutZ on 21 September 2007, tagged as worldaffairs

President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad is scheduled to speak at the UN Security Council in regards to pending sanctions against Iran over its uranium enrichment program. He has submitted a request through the NYPD to visit Ground Zero, which has stirred an enormous amount of controversy. For now, the request has been denied citing that workers are on-site and allowing him in would disrupt construction. The request could be a political maneuver, a ploy designed to lure out American intolerance and hatred into world news. If so, there is no shortage of political condemnations, as well as less PC protests, including the following in a New York newspaper: "If you even think of setting foot near Ground Zero, you can GO TO HELL!"

yeah, take it. by Anonymous :: NR0

This guy routinely leads his countries in cries of "Death to America." Why would anyone even consider letting him go to Ground Zero? An even better question is why did Columbia invite this guy to speak? What could he possibly contribute? America needs to stop bending over backwards -- no bending over forwards -- to appear tolerant, cause guys like Ahmadinejad will just give it to us up the rear.

Some Patriotic Dissent by LordDilly :: NR8

From Scott Adams, creator of Dilbert:

I was happy to hear that NYC didn’t allow Iranian President Ahmadinejad to place a wreath at the WTC site. And I was happy that Columbia University is rescinding the offer to let him speak. If you let a guy like that express his views, before long the entire world will want freedom of speech.

I hate Ahmadinejad for all the same reasons you do. For one thing, he said he wants to “wipe Israel off the map.” Scholars tell us the correct translation is more along the lines of wanting a change in Israel’s government toward something more democratic, with less gerrymandering. What an ass-muncher!

Ahmadinejad also called the holocaust a “myth.” Fuck him! A myth is something a society uses to frame their understanding of their world, and act accordingly. It’s not as if the world created a whole new country because of holocaust guilt and gives it a free pass no matter what it does. That’s Iranian crazy talk. Ahmadinejad can blow me.

Most insulting is the fact that “myth” implies the holocaust didn’t happen. F*ck him for saying that! He also says he won’t dispute the historical claims of European scientists. That is obviously the opposite of saying the holocaust didn’t happen, which I assume is his way of confusing me. God-damned fucker.

snip

The worst of the worst is that Ahmadinejad's country is helping the Iraqis kill American soldiers. If Iran ever invades Canada, I think we'd agree the best course of action for the United States is to be constructive and let things sort themselves out. Otherwise we'd be just as evil as the Iranians. Those fuckers.

And from a Daily Kos diary "Why I Have Little Crush on Mahmoud Ahmadinejad":

I know I’m a Jewish lesbian and he’d probably have me killed. But still, the guy speaks some blunt truths about the Bush Administration that make me swoon...

Okay, I admit it. Part of it is that he just looks cuddly. Possibly cuddly enough to turn me straight. I think he kind of looks like Kermit the Frog. Sort of. With smaller eyes. But that’s not all...

I want to be very clear. There are certainly many things about Ahmadinejad that I abhor — locking up dissidents, executing of gay folks, denying the fact of the Holocaust, potentially adding another dangerous nuclear power to the world and, in general, stifling democracy. Even still, I can’t help but be turned on by his frank rhetoric calling out the horrors of the Bush Administration and, for that matter, generations of US foreign policy preceding.{emphasis mine}

Recall that, back in May, Ahmadinejad sent a letter to President Bush:

Funny thing is, the same thing happened in 1933, when Columbia invited Hitler (well, a senior Nazi official) to the campus. But that whole thing turned out alright.

Columbia University President by VnutZ :: NR8

Well, it seems that the Iranian President received a very cold introduction from the university president. Now, I may not be a big fan of Ahmadinejad, but that doesn't mean a professional introduction should be waved. After all, we're talking Columbia University - not the Jerry Spring Show. We may disagree with the man's politics, but if you invited him to speak, introduce as such and convey to the students that they are about to hear a perspective far different than their own, that they are going to hear things straight from the horse's mouth without media spin, that it is a rare opportunity to get insight into the mind/culture of a person whom we don't understand or get opportunities to interact with. Let the protesters remain outside and those who are academically interested inside. I believe the University President overstepped his bounds on that one.
