He is set to be the first Russian leader since Stalin to visit Iran, but a cloud now hangs over Vladimir Putin's Tehran excursion. A source supposedly emanating from within Russia's special services indicates that there may be a plot to assassinate Putin during his visit. Iran's foreign ministry has denied the existence such a plot and called it disinformation campaign launched by Iran's opponents. If such a plot exists, it remains very unclear as to why an Iranian group would sponsor it. Putin has clashed with US leaders over Iran, stating that he sees no need for tougher sanctions against Tehran. Despite rumors of the plot, Putin plans to go ahead with the trip. Still, this would not be the first time someone has attempted to kill Mr. Putin. Russian authorities say there have been at least two previous attempts on the president's life, one in Yalta in 2000 and another in Baku. Both previous attempts were linked to Chechnya.
