With the hope of one day creating a living organism from scratch, Craig Venter and his company Celera, in conjunction with their Minimal Genome Project, have applied for a patent to claim ownership on the 400 or so genes necessary to sustain a living microbe.
Activists, who are calling this "Pandora's Bug," are railing about the company having a monopoly on life, while the Venter Institute is claiming the synthetic organisms may pave the way towards a new source of energy in the form of hydrogen.
