Pakistan Opposition Leader Assassinated

Newspaper current event by Brandon on 27 December 2007, tagged as pakistan and assassination

Benazir Bhutto, the former Prime Minister of Pakistan, was assassinated earlier today. The assassin shot the leader of the Pakistan People's Party to death and also detonated a suicide bomb that killed over 20 others. Leaders worldwide expressed outrage at the act, and are no doubt uneasy over growing civil unrest in a country already owning a nuclear arsenal.

Policy of non-intervention by Brandon :: NR9 :: on 27 December 2007

I just watched a short interview with Ron Paul on Fox News where he commented on what he would do as President in this situation: Stop giving Pakistan money and let them sort it out on their own.

It doesn't seem like a response to the current situation, really; it's just what Paul would do to all countries if he became President. His motivation is clear: Other countries don't want to be bribed or threatened, just like the U.S. doesn't. However, I wonder if Islamic extremists would be madder about U.S. involvement in a response to this assassination, or about the U.S. stopping the flow of cash...

Pakistan was our best bet for creating a stable democracy in that part of the world. With that country stabilised we would have had more chance to bring the same kind of order to Afghanistan and Iraq, which are much more difficult cases.

Instead, we backed the military dictator in Pakistan and attacked Afghanistan and Iraq. It never pays to side with a general who is governing with the support of the military but not his people. The USA should have learned that lesson after the many times it has made this mistake.

Ron Paul's policy would cause Pakistan to become a failed state, but one with a nuclear arsenal and a huge heroin resource. Just what that part of the world needs to bring on the war that will destroy us. It is the kind of dumb populist policy required to win over the ignorant masses that you need when running for President in the USA. I think he really has more sense than that but has to act dumb for the campaign.

My impression from the news coverage of this issue was the U.S. supported Bhutto.
