P2P Traffic Dominates the Internet

Newspaper current event by VnutZ on 29 November 2007, tagged as p2p, internet, networking, and computing

When it comes to bandwidth hogs, peer to peer (P2P) filesharing applications emerge hands down as the dominant traffic generators. A recent study of 2007's Internet traffic conducted by Ipoque shows that not only did P2P traffic dominate, but a single protocol [Bittorrent] accounted for nearly 66% of traffic alone. Further Ipoque studies have shown that P2P traffic accounts for between 50 to 85 percent of daytime traffic while driving more than 95 percent of nighttime network traffic. It's of little wonder that ISPs attempt to profile their network traffic, the most recent traffic shaping debacle with Comcast was recently proven by an EFF study using packet sniffers.
