OmniNerd Version 3 in Development

Newspaper

current event by markmcb on 21 March 2007, tagged as omninerdnews

What is black, gray, and white, and rides on Rails? Amtrak is good guess, but the answer is OmniNerd. OmniNerd is currently being 100% rewritten from the ground up by two of your favorite admins, markmcb and Brandon, using a framework called Ruby on Rails. You may not care about the framework, but you're sure to care about its impact on our ability to bring you better features and develop the site at a more rapid pace.

We have got some completely new site concepts in the works that we will likely keep secret until the new version's unveiling and they encompass much of what you've asked for in the past that our old code base simply wouldn't support. However, we don't want to limit v3 to the minds of the admin team and our old notes. If you've got a cool new idea, speak now or wait until version 3.1. Even if you've got an old idea that's never been implemented, please refresh our memories. As always, our skin is thick so don't worry about hurting our feelings. If something needs improvement, please let us know.

No promises on dates, but we're hoping to have everything written and tested this spring. Stay tuned.

Self-Moderation? by markmcb :: NR7

One thing we're looking at adding is an element of self moderation on the site. If you're familiar with Digg, then you're familiar with the concept, i.e., users can vote things up/down.

However, a key issue is that popular vote means just that, popular. Our current comment moderation system, for example, is built on objective criteria. I may totally disagree with something you post, but if it's well-written I'll score it highly. The same comment might get voted down in a popularity contest, which creates an obvious dilemma.

We've got some ideas for dealing with this, but I'm curious to hear yours. How would a perfect OmniNerd society work with regards to moderation and/or self-moderation?

NerdRank by markmcb :: NR7

Another thing we're curious to hear about is, what defines a good OmniNerd? With v3 will come an overhaul of the NerdRank algorithm. How can we best highlight the elite nerds on the site? Once such a status is achieved, how should the site treat those people differently, or, how could/should a new nerd be made aware of the best nerds on the site (so that they could perhaps dig through the content that helped them achieve such a status)?

Participation by gnifyus :: NR7

I said this before somewhere, but the thing I notice most is the fact that every day there are more and more new users signing up, but you never hear from them. Nothing. The new people must have opinions or thoughts on something. Post. Just once. Try it. It'll be o.k.

Also OmniNerd needs more women. Participating, I mean.

Spell Check? by Anonymous :: NR0

This has been out there forever. Gmail style seems to be the best.

Are you going to implement it in comments? It's due. I don't like pasting my comments somewhere else for the spell check before being able to hit submit.

Install OmniNerd Lie Detector by smcbride :: NR5

It could automatically deduct one nerd point from Nerdranks each time a lie is told. Anon comments detected to be false result in execution electrically by the OmniNerd server. This way we will have more people vote for Muslims, Celebrities, Females, Blacks, Atheists and Mormons in our next poll. I think if we show iphoto video of the executions, our traffic and content problem will take care of it's self! This is a very well prepared post, I am hoping for a very high score.
