Three tectonic plates form the Afar Triangle in Africa. As the African and Arabian plates seperate, geologic activity of historic, scientific proportions present themselves. Scientists are now able to witness the formation of a region that will become an ocean floor before the region is flooded by water. At present, earthquakes rock the region, tearing fissures throughout the countryside and sinking as much as 100 meters. Magma is pushing its way upwards into the cracks to form a basalt bed, much like geologists observe at the bottom of Earth's oceans. When the Denakil Depression eventually crumbles, the Red Sea will pour into the Afar Triangle, a flooding that in time, will be larger than the Red Sea itself.
