No Nerds Allowed

Newspaper current event by Brandon on 02 December 2005, tagged as humor

A nerd's constant yearning for knowledge can get him/her into many places. Nerds can even make successful businessmen - maybe even become the world's richest, but there is one place they are not allowed: the set of a new British reality show called Space Cadets. On-screen, the show weeds through dozens of contestants who are all hoping to be one of three to earn a five-day trip into space to be 'watched and envied by millions. Except they won't.'

The show is an elaborate hoax in which participants will be tricked into thinking they are in space by a Hollywood-type set. Who could be dumb enough to fall for such a trick? According to the article, those 'with the right psychological make-up... picked for their suggestibility, as well as teamwork skills, fitness and sense of calm under pressure...' will make the cut. This 'suggestibility' is said to '[rely] on the subject having a creative and easily harnessed sense of imagination.' Enduring contestants are also required to be 'badly informed... people who, in terms of life experience, are fairly naive... whose knowledge of space goes only as far as Star Wars.'

In other words, complete idiots. The show's producer said, 'It's certainly not about people being weak or gullible.' Sorry, Jonesy, that's exactly what it's about. OmniNerds need not apply.

It's all about the pretty people. Find folks that are vain enough to ignore the reality around them and you have perfect contestants for nationally broadcast ridicule. :)

That little thing called Gravity by cpeel :: NR4

Unless the TV experts have mastered an anti-gravity machine to give them the feeling of weightlessness (yeah, right) they need to find people that either

  1. don't know the concept of gravity - even in the abstract (a moron) or
  2. believe that the TV guys have created an artificial gravity machine (an idiot)

I find it difficult to believe that they can find someone who doesn't understand the basic concept of gravity which means the participants will be convinced of the latter. Can someone with a TV let me know which one it is when the stupid show ends up airing?

I bet Ralph Wiggum would make a good candidate.

A follow up and some nice commentary is available on Slashdot. So ridiculous.

Con the "astronaut" or the viewers? by cpeel :: NR4

Looks like there's some speculation if the show is trying to fool the participants or if the producers are trying to pull one over their audience instead.

Multiple Slashdot comments refer to a page that makes that case.
