In a move to help combat child obesity, the nation's largest beverage distributors (Cadbury Schweppes PLC, Coca-Cola Co., PepsiCo Inc.) have agreed to halt nearly all soda sales to public schools, according to a deal announced Wednesday by the William J. Clinton Foundation. From the article, 'Under the agreement, the companies have agreed to sell only water, unsweetened juice and low-fat milks to elementary and middle schools ... Diet sodas would be sold only to high schools.' While definitely a smart move, one must wonder if this will help combat child obesity or merely treat one symptom of a larger problem.

It will be interesting to see what effect, if any, this will have on the willingness for soft drink companies to make donations to public schools in the form of equipment, supplies, facilities, etc. When I was in high school, Pepsi donated several scoreboards for athletic facilities and also paid for several school building improvements. They did this to get a contract to be the sole provider for soft drinks in the district. Maybe it will have no effect at all.
