by Forget your new flatscreen and Hi-Definition televisions for the coming Digital TV age! That new television you have contributed more to Global Warming than carbon dioxide. Nitrogen Triflouride, a compound used in the production of Flatscreen televisions is more of a threat than CO2, according to UC-Irvine professor Michael Prather. Molecule for molecule, it is 17,000 times more potent than carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. Unfortunately, this threat is not covered in the Kyoto Treaty and has a half-life of 550 years in the atmosphere. Quoting from the Telegraph:
Professor Michael Prather from the University of California at Irvine, who came up with the estimate, said that if the entire annual production of NF3 was released into the atmosphere it would have the equivalent effect on the Earth's climate as 67 million tonnes of carbon dioxide.

I guess we'll have to wait for bioluminescent screens or something of that nature. CRT's are pretty nasty too--they're full of mercury.
In the end, I think we need tough regulations stating that before anything can go into mass production, the potential byproducts must be thoroughly researched. It will slow the pace of progress, but maybe it'll keep the planet habitable a little longer.
