Myanmar Continues to Isolate Itself

Newspaper

current event by VnutZ on 15 May 2008, tagged as myanmar, burma, relief, and disaster

Myanmar was devastated by Cyclone Nargis nearly two weeks ago. Three American military C-130s were amongst the first aid to arrive (and be granted access) to Yangoon, Myanmar to deliver much needed aid. These elements were able to respond quickly due to their training deployment in Thailand for the annual Cobra Gold exercises. Despite the arrival of aid from the United States and other countries, the Burmese Junta has blocked the majority of incoming supplies and almost all aid workers from accessing the country. Reports indicate the food that has been doled out to the survivors is largely low quality or rotten, leading most donating nations to believe their relief packages went directly to the Junta. Virtually all news from inside Myanmar has come from journalists that snuck across the borders to report on conditions while evading capture. Still, the Burmese Junta continue to announce they are fully capable of handling the situation with indications the cyclone only affected about 30,000 citizens despite international estimates that up to 2 million Burmese were impacted.
