Who is the U.S. is most likely to volunteer their time? A new government study says it's probably a midwesterner. The Corporation for National and Community Service says Minneapolis-St. Paul tops the list for the volunteer spirit, with Salt Lake City, Austin and Omaha following. Among those cities with the least volunteerism are Las Vegas, Miami, Virginia Beach and Riverside, CA, seeming to indicate a volunteer-malaise of sorts affecting the coasts. The research, based on Census Bureau data, points out various social and demographic patterns which appear to induce higher volunteer rates: 1) short commutes to work, 2) home ownership, 3) high education levels, and 4) access to nonprofit organizations. Additionally, the study shows the national percentage of adults who said they have volunteered has decreased since 2005.

Efficiency by Anonymous :: NR0 :: Show
I've heard it suggested if one is highly paid (e.g. stockbroker, lawyer...), it is more efficient to work an extra hour and donate the money to charity, than to spend that same hour doing trivial volunteer work (e.g. working in a soup kitchen).
Of course, that doesn't mean this is what people on the coasts are doing.
