Mathematics of the Toilet Seat Problem

Ever since Thomas P. Crapper invented the flushing toilet, and his wife invented the seat, there have been domestic arguments over how the seat should be left. Finally, in true Nerd style, the question is addressed using Game Theory. The Science Creative Quarterly presents A Game Theoretic Approach to The Toilet Seat Problem.

At last, everyone can know the ideal state the toilet should be left in, other than flushed.

I think the most fair solution is that the Toilet Seat Lid is left down every time. It increases the cost for everyone, but then at least everyone has to pay the same cost, regardless of the operation.

Well, this in a household with both a John and a Martha, anyway.

Obviously you do not subscribe to the philosophy of "If it's yellow, let it mellow, if it's brown, flush it down."
