The death of a six-week-old baby boy due to the results of malnutrition has caused a vegan Atlanta couple to be sentenced to life in prison. The boy was fed a diet mostly consisting of soy milk and apple juice, and weighed only 3-1/2 pounds before he died of starvation on April 25, 2004. A jury deliberated 7 hours before finding the couple guilty of malice murder, felony murder, involuntary manslaughter and cruelty to children.
Defense lawyers said the first-time parents were adhering to their strict vegan lifestyle, which allows no consumption of animal products, and did the best they could, claiming Lamont Thomas, 31, and Jade Sanders, 27 did not realize that the baby - who was born in a bathtub at home- was in danger until minutes before he died. Prosecutors countered the baby died of starvation not because of what he was fed, but because he was fed too little. They said the couple deliberately neglected the child and did not take him to the doctor even as the child entered the final stages of malnutrition.
"No matter how many times they want to say, 'We're vegans, we're vegetarians,' that's not the issue in this case," said prosecutor Chuck Boring. "The child died because he was not fed. Period."
Justice is Served...
Well Done.....
would be more fitting.
I’m a healthy vegan and so is my son. I agree that a vegan diet isn’t to blame for this tragedy. The baby’s parents were just negligent, irresponsible, and downright stupid. Children can thrive on a vegan diet. The American Dietetic Association states that “Well-planned vegan and other types of vegetarian diets are appropriate for all stages of the life cycle, including during pregnancy, lactation, infancy, childhood, and adolescence.”
Dr. Benjamin Spock, the author of Baby and Child Care, wrote that “children who grow up getting their nutrition from plant foods rather than meats have a tremendous health advantage. They are less likely to develop weight problems, diabetes, high blood pressure, and some forms of cancer.”
And pediatrician and author Dr. Charles Attwood, says, “Children on a diet of mostly vegetables, fruits, grains, and legumes, when consuming adequate calories, not only grow normally, but have actually been shown to attain greater height than meat-eating children.
Many other health experts and knowledgeable vegan parents know that vegan children can grow up big and strong on a balanced vegan diets.

There has been a lot of hate remarks concerning this situation. People are saying all kinds of nasty things about these people. But something has been bothering me.
People are obviously upset about the fact that these people inadvertently killed their son. Hmm, they should have gone with the abortion method instead. Gets the same job done, but without the life term in prison. Plus, the remarks would have changed from complete hate and disgust to, “they have every right; it's her body; the fetus isn't really a baby anyway; I commend her for her bravery to get the operation done; etc”.
Makes a whole heck of a lot of sense, doesn't it?
Why does a born baby have the right to life while an unborn does not?
for any of you who try to downplay this as lack of food rather then a vegan diet killed the poor child, there have been several cases lately about children on vegan diets in horrid health. one girl developed the spine of an 80 yr old women ecause her parents where vegans. that girl was 12 years old. another girl had very bad health, her teeth had holes, she was too low in weight, her muscles degenerated, all because of her parents vegan diet. now vegans are probably going to say something about the diets not being done properly, or something like that. but let me ask, if veganism is the more "natural" choice and humans were not made to eat meat, why do vegans need to take supplements?

Not to kill. by Eye.Of.Sage :: NR6 :: Show
Oh geee......the signs of malnutrition and starvation are so vague......
Ironic isn't it? In an attempt to save the lives of animals, they killed their own child.
