Is it time to be paranoid?

Newspaper current event by NastyPrincess on 28 July 2006, tagged as worldaffairs

Ayman al-Zawahri, the number two leader of Al-Qaida, issued a worldwide call for all Muslims and downtrodden individuals to fight the 'jihad (holy war) for the sake of God [that] will last until (our) religion prevails ... from Spain to Iraq.' Through an Al-Jazeera broadcast, he further proclaims 'all the world is a battlefield open in front of us.' The concern is not necessarily that uneducated, untrained and impoverished individuals will answer the call. Rather, studies show most terrorists (90%) come from caring, intact families and most have college educations and promising, professional careers. If this pool rallies to the call, the jihad can make use of intelligent and affluent resources.

If even a fraction of the world's estimated 1.7 billion Muslims answer the call to arms, the results could be catastrophic. Although only a small group of that population is Al-Qaida, it only takes a few to kill many. Is it time for Americans to train children about the invincibility of their school desks and construct backyard bomb shelters again?

In theory - no, you have nothing to be paranoid about. After all, the terrorist groups carefully discriminate their targets and can identify the criminal Americans from the pacifist Americans. Right? Clearly they're only mad at the criminal American forces in their homeland and various Jewish investors.

Or perhaps the GWOT isn't so criminal after all - but a necessary reality against this systemic threat?

Sound Familiar by Eye.Of.Sage :: NR6

You know, all of this sound kind of familiar to a book I read once. The book is called "Dune", by Frank Herbert. It's very strange how similar the plot of the book is to the current event. Instead of oil, they had spice, instead of terrorist they had the Freman. The book even said there will be a holy war, a 'jihad in the name of a messiah. Very interesting indeed.

How would you explain that? Maybe, its a result of those type of people being more vulnurable de endoctrination. If you bow to cultural pressures about having a "traditional" lifestyle and family, you might be more likely to accept other irrational beliefs?

Have you forgotten 9-11? by smcbride :: NR6

Hey, we did not start this shit storm! Al-Qaida attacked us, and if the truth was know, I bet they wish they had left us alone. How can they rule the World when they can't control there own backyards.

Americans will rise to the occasion, if they start attacks here, we will finish it here. We won't run, and we won't hide, we will fight and we will damn sure prevail.

Sure we may suffer some hardships, lose of life, run on banks, grocery stores, gas stations, stock markets and many other things we take for granted might disappear, like clean water and electrical services. Many of the weak might die without proper medical care. But don't doubt the resolve of this melting pot called the United States. After it is all over we will be stronger for it. Truth is, I DO NOT see anything like this happening.

But if it does, maybe some of our liberal American friends will lend us there Peace Fairy's to help with our defense, if and when the terrorist come.

The US is vulnerable. by starm_ :: NR0

I was just thinking about nuclear attacks and it came to me that if ever the US would be attacked by nuclear weapons, say, by nukes hidden in cargo or lauched from stealth submarines or something like that, since the US has made so many enemies recently, I'm not sure it would even be in a position to know who attacked them and thus respond to the attack. It could be NKorea, Iran, China, Pakistan, Russia, terrorists groups acting on behalf of one of those countries, or a coalition of the above.

I think this is a pretty incredible vulnarability awaiting to be exploited. An enemy could take out a big part of your capabilities before your could even find out who was doing it. Nukes could start falling and everybody, including the enemy, could pretend to be on your side and bargan only trough terrorist groups hiding the identity of their masters.
