Iranian Minister Touts Temporary Marriage

Newspaper current event by willwaddell on 03 June 2007, tagged as sociology

Within Shia Islam there is a culturally taboo but legitimate practice called temporary marriage or sigheh. Though rejected by Sunni Muslims, this doctrine allows for two people to become married for a set length of time, during which time sexual relations become morally permissible. This marriage is being touted by Iranian Interior Minister Mostafa Pourmohammadi as a way to meet the needs of young people looking for sex. This proposition has brought on much criticism from female activists and, of course, re-inflames the dispute between Sunni and Shia versions of Islamic jurisprudence. Because the marriage may go on for as long or as short (e.g. a few hours) as the couple would like and involves an exchange of money or "bride price," some Sunni scholars say it is merely prostitution. Although Sunni and Shia camps agree that temporary marriage was once acceptable, the Sunni insist that Mohammed later banned it, while the Shia say he did not.

temps and temptation by djofraleigh :: NR0

That's the kind of marriage we have in the US,

if you factor divorce into it, and separation.

I mean, the US doesn't have a stated time limit,

but just look at Hollywood for the quickie deals.

Marry in Vegas, then to Mexico for the honeymoon/divorce.

Assuming Iranians pay a fee/tax for permits to marry,

then it would be a money maker for the state, as well.

Then again, with the emphasis on virgins in Islam,

how marketable is the temp after her time is up?

Maybe they could have time-share Temps, every Friday at 8.

Speaking of Temps, why not have that in the USA?

Wife has a headache, call in the Temp service,

and vice versa, of course, for the ladies.

Once more, by such actions, the Islamic government

and rule by Islamic law is showing weakness

in that they must bend to not break.

Regulating morality by gheorghe :: NR5

It is rather unfortunate that people don't have the courage to admit they are human beings and it is ok to drink and engage in sexual activities within certain limits.

Across cultures, I find the various restrictions placed on certain behaviours rather disturbing. It used to be sexual behavior everywhere. It used to be drinking alcohol in the States during Prohibition.

From my observations as a foreigner in the US, I find it amusing that most Americans discuss sex rather openly, yet they are appalled when folks engage in Public Display of Affection (kissing, hugging). I live in the DC area, and I can only imagine what the social norms dictate in other parts of the United States.

In retrospect, Prohibition seems ridiculous, yet it is similar to the Temporary Marriage mentioned above. It only shows why governments should keep out of one's bedroom and kitchen.

They may have something by Anonymous :: NR0

I think that with the ridiculous rates of divorce in this country(U.S.) not to mention the horrific pain of the divorce process when separating from someone you are not suited to, a temporary marriage situation negotiated between the two parties along with clearly defined guidelines (pre/post nuptuals) would actually help to prolong relationships by giving both parties the freedom they need to find the right person to settle down with rather than settling for a relationship that can develop into a destructive trap.

long term commitment should be a voluntary endeavor, not a trap that shuts when the "I DO"s are spoken.
