Independent Music Labels Go in on Licensing and Web Distribution

Newspaper current event by Brandon on 23 January 2007, tagged as music

The world's independent music scene has grown with leaps and bounds along with the increasing prevalence of the Internet. Bands that previously would have dominated only those within the local scene can now gain fans all over the world via sites such as YouTube and MySpace. Taking things a step further, independent music labels grouped together and launched an agency called "Merlin" at the MidemNet music industry conference. Proponents claim Merlin, which aims to to secure licensing deals with emerging media, will become the "fifth major" in the industry.

The non-profit, privately-funded and London-based organization has already received backing from trade bodies in Europe, Canada, Brazil, New Zealand and Australia. It has also announced its first deal, in which an agreement with digital music company Snocap will allow Merlin labels' music to be sold from Web sites such as MySpace.
