The Book Industry Study Group has been preparing those in the book industry for the ISBN switch since the final revised standards were set in 2004, and now the time has come. Behold! ISBN-13.
That's 13 as in 13 digits long, not years old. While it may not be exciting, that cryptic 10-digit number on the back of all your books just grew by 3 digits to help ensure that all books printed in the near future have a unique identifier associated with them.
You're probably thinking, "Oh my! I've been entering 10-digit ISBNs into OmniNerd for my books and now everyone is going to laugh at me!" Don't worry. OmniNerd has got your nerd back. Since ISBN numbers have mathematical significance, there is a 1:1 correlation between ISBN-10 and ISBN-13. The site has been converting your 10-digit ISBNs all along so that your ego doesn't have to suffer. Just one more perk of being an OmniNerd.

Why the calculations? by tomtolman :: NR6 :: Show

Why couldn't they just add three trailing zeros or something? Why are all these calculations necessary?
