Many soldiers who have served in the Middle East are familiar with the phrase, "men are for pleasure, women are for babies." Homosexual behaviors and practices seemed to pervade the society despite a strong objection to being labeled as gay. Now, being identified as gay in Iraq will likely cause one to be kidnapped and tortured if not killed outright. Perhaps the peculiar irony to the tale of gay and lesbian torture in Iraq is that the captors seem to choose homosexual sodomy for their victims - yet continue to find themselves pure.

Depends on How You Define "Gay" by LordDilly :: NR8 :: Show
I think we might be hitting cultural translation problems. I think (and I may be waay off base) that the sexual mores of the region may be similar to attitudes common to that region as well as the Mediterranean millenia ago. Getting a good read on what was considered "gay" in ancient times is hard because a lot of modern bias and spin is involved in the interpretation, but the gist that I get is shagging a boy before his "first beard" means neither one are "gay": it isn't "man-on-man" action because the boy isn't a man, and the man is the "pitcher" not the "catcher," if you will excuse the expression. In ancient Greece the male form was considered a thing of beauty, a work of art-- it wasn't untoward to gaze upon your buddy working out nekkid and remark "that is a fine ass." Women in ancient Greece were considered second class citizens and mostly as male property, and you'll find the female form considered not nearly as "admirable" as the male. So, a lot of ancient Greek behavior would come across as very "gay" today.
Now let's juxtapose that analysis with modern Middle Eastern society: again, women are considered literally "half of a man" under sharia, female modesty is considered the highest feminine virtue, and men don't show affection to their women folk in public as a general rule. Gazing lovingly at boys isn't wrong because they are plainly not female and not yet men, and let's be honest: it's like the old (offensive) joke told among guys in the States: "if you suck my d*ck I'm not gay, you are," hence the notion that the man who is doing the anal raping isn't gay, it's the guy on the receiving end. Just my interpretation, I could totally wrong.
