Halloween: Many Things to Many People

Newspaper current event by willwaddell on 31 October 2005, tagged as halloween

Well it's October 31st! That, of course, means that ghouls and goblins run amok on the day known around the world as Halloween. This tradition has many roots and twists. The Druids, for example, believed that during this time of year entities could move freely between the spirit world and our material realm. Some content themselves with jack-o'-laterns and trick-or-treating. Still others, interestingly enough, view Halloween as an insidious agent of US culture. Hugo Chavez has called Halloween a 'game of terror' instituted by the US and directed at 'putting fear into their own people.'

In the US itself, Halloween has far from universal support. Though the majority of Americans view Halloween as a fun holiday without real significance, others see it as 'pagan' rite and 'the most evil day of the year.' But October 31st has still more significance, though of a much different vein, for it was on October 31st in 1517 that Martin Luther posted his famous 95 Theses on the door of the Castle Church in Wittenberg, Germany, effectively ushering in the Reformation.

October 31st ... what a day! You've got God, the Devil, ghouls, pumpkins, and a slight dash of angry dictator from Venezuela. Happy Halloween from OmniNerd.

Nerdiest Costumes? by markmcb :: NR7

I'm curious to hear about some nerdy costumes. If you were a vampire, or a ghost, you don't count. But if you had to explain to someone what your costume was, or why it was clever, then let's hear about it.

My wife and I were Apple iPods. I was the new full-color iPod. On my screen was an album by Jessica Simpson playing the track entitled, "Mark is Hot." I thought that was pretty funny (even if it's totally true!!!).

Liz's was funnier though, in my opinion. She was an iPod mini. If you're not aware, Apple stopped making the mini when the nano came out. So we but the standard Apple logo on the screen but gave it an evil eye and some teeth. It was "back from the dead." I'm laughing as I type just thinking about an iPod being scary.

So anyway, there's mine. Let's hear yours.
