We at OmniNerd have a spotless track-record of warning and preparing humanity for the coming struggle of man vs. machine. But some are too proud, too arrogant and refuse to heed the warnings. Others are far worse still, actually tempting fate and forgetting that, for man, his reach is always farther than his grasp.
As you read this, the British military is preparing to launch the first of a series of satellites that will provide the Limeys with an unprecedented ability to transfer data between various command centers. A lead developer for the project describes the advancement as "groundbreaking" and says "it's going to provide five time the capacity that the previous network provided ..." Information, they all argue, is key to modern warfare.
So what, you might ask, is the name of this remarkable system that will integrate the British defense establishment? Skynet! That's right. Skynet! If that doesn't ring any bells, it should. Intrepid documentary-maker James Cameron showed us what a Global Digital Defense Network by this very name is capable of doing in his prescient Terminator series. Once Skynet becomes self-aware, its machine-driven quest for efficiency will dictate the eradication of the human race. Nuclear war will be in the offing and those lucky enough to survive will only find themselves prey for a new species of robot killing-machines bent on human carnage.
Help us Governor of California ... you're our only hope.
I wouldn't be too worried just yet: ArianeSpace's launch attempt last night was scrubbed because of a stuck valve in the "water deluge system", a large water tower that dumps thousands of litres of water on the launch table so that the noise of the rocket doesn't wake too many French Guianans from their siesta. Yes that's right, everything with the actual rocket works fine but the launch was delayed so the natives could have a lie-in.
The next launch is about 22.00 UTC today, so hopefully someone will be able to find the right type of wrench, or the requisite number of ear mufflers, before then.
(Interested parties can watch the launch live here. The vehicle is a huge Ariane 5 ECA - these launches are really worth watching).
Well, beyond name-calling you've actually told us very little about what this system will do..you've merely speculated. Not a very constructive way of getting your point across.

Skyney - Nerds should know a little about tech by Anonymous :: NR0 :: on 11 March 2007
Hi
Just because it's called Skynet you assume it is an artifically intelligent machine. Did you read that is a press release somewhere?
Our current A.I.'s have the intelligence of a retarded 5 month old.
Cars can't even drive by themselves yet so I don't think we have much to worry about.
Don't nukes have to have two keys to launch? Of course if thats hollywood then the real world must have some sort of safety system in place.
