Go Ahead and Eat That

Newspaper current event by willwaddell on 19 May 2007, tagged as fitnessnutrition

Everyone knows that if you drop food on the floor, you have five seconds to snatch it back up again and if eaten in this interval, no harm no foul. But the "five-second rule" may actually be giving bacteria a little too much credit. Two students at Connecticut College have discovered that bacteria takes at least a minute to start forming colonies. If that dropped food item is dry, then you may have up to five minutes before the bacteria move in. So, the next time you accidentally drop that cookie, don't worry. You've got all the time in the world.

Look before you lick!

Bacteria isn't the only worry.

What if it falls into a pool of oil

or a pile of ground up glass?

The five second rule isn't too cool.

You have to know your floor.
