Germany Says Nein to Tom Cruise

Newspaper current event by willwaddell on 26 June 2007, tagged as worldaffairs

Tom Cruise has been cast in a new role, perhaps one of the most important of his career. In the new film, Cruise is set to play Colonel Claus von Stauffenberg, one of the principal figures in the July 20 Plot which tried to assassinate Adolf Hitler. There is a problem, however. Cruise, a noted Scientologist, and the makers of his new film have been denied access to German military facilities by the German defense ministry because of Cruise's affliation. Scientology is not regarded in Germany as a real religion, but rather as a money-making "cult" whose activities Germany believes are "directed against the free democratic order in the country." Though a co-producer for the film has said Cruise's personal beliefs will play no part in the film, the son of Colonel von Stauffenberg told a German newspaper Cruise should keep his hands off his father, advising the Scientologist to instead "climb a mountain or go surfing in the Caribbean."
