Fuel Economy Gets Worse

Newspaper current event by markmcb on 13 October 2005, tagged as mechanics

High gas prices. Hybrid vehicles. Environmental awareness. With all of these common buzz words, you'd think that your average fuel economy would be getting better as auto makers strive to be more fuel efficient. Unfortunately, that is not the case. A quick browse for your favorite vehicle on the U.S. government site fueleconomy.gov will probably leave you with the knowledge that your new model of choice is getting equal or worse gas mileage than in previous years.

And if that's not bad enough, Consumer Reports states that the government miles per gallon rating you'll find on the sticker of your new car may be optimistic by as much as 35 to 50 percent.

On the flip side, and expectedly so, bicycle sales are approaching an all-time high. Interestingly, if you look in the URL on that last link, you'll notice that the story is filed under 'funny.' I just wonder if anyone is laughing.

Save The Jeeps! by VnutZ :: NR8 :: on 13 October 2005

Well, the sooner the hippies in Priuses and other Earth-mobiles give up and switch to bicycles, the more gasoline will be available for my Jeep Wrangler to use tearing across pristine, untouched country-side. Sometimes you just gotta let those BIG TIRES rip into the flora to get that extra oomph up the hill towards where the air is cleaner. Sure, my exhaust makes that clean air a little dirtier, but the jet stream will ultimately take my carbon monoxide to Europe. As you climb higher, it'll take some WINCHING and BULLBARRING through those forests that haven't been trailblazed yet. But the small trees are small because they're weak ... I'm just weeding out their recessive traits. Maybe if we'd just let those endangered species die off, they would turn into oil faster. Yes yes ... go get a bicycle and save the gas for the Jeeps.
