Five Undersea Cables Cut

Newspaper current event by VnutZ on 06 February 2008, tagged as internet, world affairs, and conspiracy

The past few days have seen five major undersea cables cut as a result of myriad accidents. The first cut cable, which was attributed to a ship anchor without much fanfare, resulted in Internet connectivity outages for an estimated 75 million subscribers. Since then, additional undersea communications cables have been severed, leading some to question whether the trend is due to mere coincidence or possibly nefarious efforts. Today, yet another severed cable makes a total of five - this time bringing connectivity outages for Iran. Reports are sketchy, but the fifth cut seems to be along the same FALCON cable as the first incident, just in a different place.

Schneier: "EDITED TO ADD (2/5): Just to be clear: Iran is not offline. That was an untrue rumor; it was never true."

So, nothing to see here

Even with the addendum that Iran is not off-line ... it's still five cables in a matter of what - less than 10 days? Has that ever been reported before? Or perhaps Godzilla is up and stirring in a new undersea location. The Japanese must be breathing a huge sigh of relief.
