Facial Recognition Software for the Masses

Newspaper current event by gnifyus on 23 December 2006, tagged as photography and technology

The Swedish Polar Rose company has software that can recognize facial features, essentially making actual photos searchable on the Web. They state, “The photo web of today is like the text web before Altavista, Inktomi, and Google. Polar Rose makes photos searchable by analyzing their content and recognizing the people in them.”

They plan to release a browser plug-in for Internet Explorer and FireFox early next year. Polar Rose is relying on a combination of facial recognition algorithms and users, who will "tag" names on people who aren’t already identified to help train the search engine.

In response to the natural privacy concerns that have come up, Polar Rose has taken the stance that lots of text material that wasn’t available before, is now available due to the efforts of Google and others, and photos should share the same ability to be searchable.
