The FBI is beginning to gather data for what will someday be the world's most comprehensive collection of people's physical characteristics, including finger and palm prints, and later extending to iris patterns, face shape data and possibly even into the ways individuals walk and talk. Despite long time criticism towards the idea of a national ID from civil liberty groups mixed with concerns about the general reliability of the new technology, FBI assistant director Thomas E. Bush assures the initiative will not infringe on peoples civil rights, and innocent people have nothing to fear from the new database.
In an interview with the BBC he states, "Post-9/11 we've had an increase in our customer base. We need a system that is literally bigger, faster[,] better. What we deal with is bad guys data [-] suspected terrorists or criminals."
